FAQ

Q: Which version of WordPress does the App work with?
A: The App works with WordPress.com and self-installed WordPress 2.5.1 or higher, and WordPress MU 2.6 or higher.

Q: Which device will this work with?
A: The App works with most recent BlackBerry devices starting with the 8700, Curve, Pearl, Bold, and Storm. BlackBerry Device Software (OS) Version 4.2.1 is the minimum required.

Q: How do I download the latest version of the app ?
A: The App will periodically check to see if you have the latest version. To check manually, point your browser to http://blackberry.wordpress.org/install. That should initiate a download screen which will show you the latest download version and the version you currently have installed. If we’ve announced a new beta but the download screen shows an old version, try clearing your BlackBerry’s browser cache first.

Q: I’m receiving the following error: “A server communication error occurred : Tunnel failed”. How do I fix that ?
A: These types of errors generally relate to your network connection setting. In the WordPress app, click on Setup, and review the connections you want to enable. Unchecking “WAP’, for example, has helped resolve this issue for a few people. If that doesn’t help make sure that permissions are set correctly. On your BlackBerry, go to “Options > Advanced Options > Applications”. Scroll through the list and highlight and select “WordPress for BlackBerry”. Next, Click on the app, and choose Edit Permissions and ensure they are set to “Allow”.

Q: The app does not seem to work properly on the Storm. The screen orientation is odd, and scrolling does not work properly. How do I resolve these issues ?
A: You need to run the app with Compatibility mode OFF. Go to option-> Advanced options-> Application. Next, select the WordPress app from the list, push the menu button and select “Disable the compatibility mode”.

Q: Do you support BIS connections ?
A: Yes, as of beta 0.9.0.149 BIS-b support is included. If you don’t see the option, please make sure have the latest version of the app by pointing your mobile browser at: http://blackberry.wordpress.org/install .

Q: I get an “We could not find the XML-RPC endpoint of your blog” error but I have XML-RPC enabled, what do I do ?
A: First ensure that you’ve typed in the URL correctly. If it’s correct, and you are on self-hosted WordPress, verify that xmlrpc.php is functioning properly. Locate your RSD meta tag by viewing-source on your blog. It will look similar to this:
<link rel="EditURI" type="application/rsd+xml" title="RSD" href="http://example.com/xmlrpc.php?rsd" />
Next, follow the link, http://example.com/xmlrpc.php?rsd, and make sure it resolved to an XML file. Locate the WordPress API item: http://example.com/xmlrpc.php. And lastly, load that apiLink value into your browser. If everything is setup correctly, you should see this message: “XML-RPC server accepts POST requests only.”

Q: I followed the XML-RPC verification steps above, but I get a different message or the RSD page loads very slowly. Now what?
A: Check with your hosting provider or system administrator to see if permissions or other issues are causing the error. If you receive a “Precondition Failed” that is most likely a mod_Security issue discussed in this WordPress Support Forum discussion. If the RSD page loads very slowly, read up on this.

Q: I checked the RSD and XML-RPC and everything is fine, but I still get an error and/or can’t add my blog. Now what?
A: Another common issue that can cause errors with the App is invalid characters.  The easiest way to check is to go to the W3C Markup Validator and type in the URL of your WordPress site.  If you get a response such as “… one or more bytes that I cannot interpret as UTF-8″ that is most likely what is causing the BlackBerry App to have trouble with your site.

Q: I receive the following error: “The application WordPress has attempted to open a connection to a location inside the firewall and outside the firewall which is not allowed by your IT policy.” How do I fix that ?
A: This issue is related to your phone’s IT policy setting, not to WordPress for BlackBerry app. Make sure that permissions are set correctly. On your BlackBerry, go to “Options > Advanced Options > Applications”. Scroll through the list and highlight and select “WordPress for BlackBerry?”. Next, click on the app, and choose Edit Permissions and ensure they are set to “Allow”. If you receive same error again, you can try to do the following: Go to Options-> Security options-> Firewall-> Edit default permissions-> expand all options and make them all as Allow. Then go to Options-> Security options-> General setting-> IT policy name-> press the trackball and select Verify Security software. If that doesn’t help and you u are on a BES connection, contact your IT department and ask them to allow “Split Pipe Policy”. You may also want to refer to this BlackBerry.com knowledge base artice.

    Q: The app does not seem to work properly on the Storm. The screen orientation is odd, and scrolling does not work properly. How do I resolve these issues ?
    A: You need to run the app with Compatibility mode OFF. Go to option-> Advanced options-> Application -> WordPress to change this setting.

    This is NOT an option in the menu hierarchy on the BB Storm. There is NO compatibility feature.

      @Luciana
      did you try to select all connection type in the Setup screen ?
      - Direct TCP stack
      - Wap 2.0 Gateway
      - Blackberry Internet Service
      - Blackberry Enterprise Server

      Dont select “personal connection settings”.

      If your issue still there, you can post to the forums with some details so we can take a look — thanks.

    I have installed on my Curve OK, however the xmlrpc.php problem is occurring. I have followed the suggestions above, including the Markup Validation Service. It finds this line:

    Line 59, Column 18: Attribute “language” exists, but can not be used for this element.

    <script language="javascript" type="text/javascript" src="http://www.myactualdomainwashere.org/

    You have used the attribute named above in your document, but the document type you are using does not support that attribute for this element. This error is often caused by incorrect use of the "Strict" document type with a document that uses frames (e.g. you must use the "Transitional" document type to get the "target" attribute), or by using vendor proprietary extensions such as "marginheight" (this is usually fixed by using CSS to achieve the desired effect instead).

    This error may also result if the element itself is not supported in the document type you are using, as an undefined element will have no supported attributes; in this case, see the element-undefined error message for further information.

    How to fix: check the spelling and case of the element and attribute, (Remember XHTML is all lower-case) and/or check that they are both allowed in the chosen document type, and/or use CSS instead of this attribute. If you received this error when using the element to incorporate flash media in a Web page, see the FAQ item on valid flash.

    I’m not technical enough to have modified the page from whatever WordPress and the theme did, so not sure if this is an issue or not…

    Thanks!

      @Brock
      I’ve done a little test on your blog at http://www.nanson.org/wordpress .
      You must explicitly enable the XML-RPC remote publishing interface.
      (Log in to your blog with the admin account, and go to Settings, and then Writing. Check the box next to “XML-RPC” on the Writing options page, and save the settings.)

      If your issue still there, can you post a few details in the forums so we can take a look — thanks.

    I have installed the app on my blackberry pearl, but i’m getting the XMLRPC error. I have followed all the advice on this page, but it is still not working! is there anything else i can try to get it working?

    1. Danilo

      @Christiaan Hendriksen
      The XML-RPC services are disabled on your blog — http://www.hendriksen.co.uk/
